What can I do in the Lands of Lleida?

Discover the natural wonders and cultural treasures of les Terres de Lleida, where ancient heritage blends with breathtaking landscapes and vibrant traditions. This unique region offers unforgettable experiences, from exceptional ecosystems and outdoor adventures to rich gastronomic delights.

In the plain, the dryland areas contrast with the irrigated zones of the Segarra-Garrigues and the canal d'Urgell, creating a unique and fascinating environment.

The secans lleidatans, covering nearly 90,000 hectares of steppe terrain, constitute an exceptional ecosystem in Europe. This habitat is the last refuge for numerous endangered species, such as the red-tailed lark, the sisó, the ganga, and the calàndria.

Wetland areas are natural spaces of ecological importance. Thus, the embassament of Sant Llorenç de Montgai and the estany d'Ivars stand out for their rich diversity of fauna, making them ideal settings for the conservation and study of aquatic ecosystems.

The Terres de Lleida have established themselves as a reference point in ornithological observation, attracting enthusiasts with the variety of bird species that inhabit the region.

The rivers Segre, Noguera Ribagorçana, and Noguera Pallaresa, along with the reservoirs of Camarasa, Sant Llorenç de Montgai, Rialb, Santa Anna, and Canelles, form wet environments ideal for activities such as kayaking or catch-and-release fishing.

Montsec, with its imposing red-hued rock face, defined by the congostos of Mont-rebei, Terradets, and the pas Nou, opens up a world of excursions, where the classic route through Mont-rebei stands out.

The gastronomic richness of the region is reflected in the wines of Costers del Segre and the oils with various designations, especially those from les Garrigues, as well as in the agricultural tradition that nourishes our restaurants with authentic flavors.

We must not forget the torrones from Agramunt and Os de Balaguer, nor the coques de recapte from the many local bakeries, always busy with people returning to the capital with the desire to take a piece of Lleida home.

The fruit stands, which fill the plain with vibrant colors, have become an important tourist attraction in the area.

The sky of Lleida, with its Starlight designation, is famous for its excellent quality when it comes to stargazing.

Furthermore, les Terres de Lleida host numerous festivals with great attendance, such as the Aplec del Cargol de Lleida, the Fira de Teatre de Tàrrega, the Aquelarre de Cervera, and la Transsegre de Balaguer.

The historical and cultural richness is also evident in the remnants of the past: castles, towers, churches, as well as paleontological, archaeological, and geological treasures, offering attractions for every taste.

Finally, les Terres de Lleida are a true paradise for lovers of sports and physical activity. With an extensive network of routes for cycling, hiking, and rock climbing, the contrasting landscapes — from expansive fields to rugged mountains — offer challenges for all levels, turning each outing into an unforgettable experience.

Vicens nougats from Agramunt

Tienda de Agramunt de Torrons Vicens

Much marketing, well-placed shops, narrower nougat bars, the touch of Albert Adrià from Bulli, and a plethora of references have revolutionized the nougat tradition in Agramunt, expanding and destacionalizing nougat consumption worldwide.

In their store in Agramunt, we can buy freshly made nougats by weight from the workshop, which are much more flavorful.
Personally, my favorites for Christmas are the traditional ones; the others tend to overwhelm me as they have very strong flavors.

La Cava de Tàrrega

Albert Marimón offers a unique culinary experience at this signature restaurant, with special attention to local ingredients. The restaurant ambiance is predominantly occupied by middle-aged adults. The generous and elaborately crafted tapas go beyond the traditional concept, often becoming main courses. The inclusion of mushrooms during the season stands out, adding a special touch to the dishes. Regarding the wine list, although not extensive, it offers a selection of lesser-known wines that complement the culinary choices well. In conclusion, a unique gastronomic experience with Albert Marimón's personal touch.

Espai Guinovart - Contemporary art - Agramunt

The Espai Guinovart is my favorite place in Agramunt. The building and the work are in perfect harmony. The people who manage the museum convey their enthusiasm for the work with great passion.

Josep Guinovart spent part of the Civil War in the village of his mother, Agramunt, where he lived in a cabin while fleeing from the bombings. This fact links his work significantly to the rural environment and Agramunt.

L' era

The passage of time associated with the era where wheat is threshed in summer.

La cabana

A central oak tree that links with the constellations of the Milky Way, surrounded by the consequences of the Spanish Civil War in the lands of Agramunt.

The color changes that occur in the plain of Lleida are remarkable, from the cultivated fields where poppies emerge to the bare lands and fog.

Jolonch Chocolat factory of Agramunt

Xolocala Jolonch, which has been manufacturing cocoa tablets to melt and stone chocolate by hand since 1770, has a shop with a cafeteria in its old factory in the Pou square of Agramunt.

The cafeteria is fantastic, with a huge outdoor terrace with swings and parking.

The product is excellent. Personally, I opt for the black hot chocolate with pepper and some churros. The best chocolate I've ever tasted.

It seems to be that in 1940 when Lluís Companys was murdered, his last will was a piece of xocolata Jolonch.

El pilar d'Almenara

The Almenara pillar is a Christian watchtower built shortly after the reconquest on the Bellmunt-Almenara mountain range.

The 15 meter high tower has free access, it is entered by going up an external spiral staircase that leads to two flights of internal metallic and vertical stairs. Going up can become a little adventure.

At the top, a terrace 7 meters in diameter, without railings, which with only about 100 meters above the horizon becomes a fantastic viewpoint over the Urgell plain. With good binoculars it allows us to see a lot of places, such as the Cargol tower, another watchtower located in the Sierra de la Força, in the municipality of Ponts.

A few meters to the east we have the Romanesque church of Sant Vivenç plundered by Republican soldiers to make machine gun nests in the area during the Civil War.

In the photos you can see graffitis, something classic in heritage with free access. As in other spaces, access will end up being restricted. A pity.
I think it is an ideal place to go to see sunsets with good binoculars. We have gone too early and with haze.

Pilar de Almenara is part of the natural space of the Sierra de Bellmunt, where you can see little bustards, dukes, barn owls, lovebirds, blue jays and hawks.
